When most people hear Mexico being mentioned, hundreds of images come to mind. This huge country is undoubtedly one of the most diverse and magnificent destinations for everyone who visits. Mexico is well known for its diverse scenery, typical celebrations, abundant history and culture, but above all for its delicious and incomparable traditional cuisine.
The magnificent cuisine is famous throughout the world for many reasons. Dishes stand out for the high-quality ingredients which are generally brightly coloured and full of intense and spicy flavours. That’s why we would like to encourage you to try at least some of the typical dishes we recommend below. They are like poetry for the palate, and we’re sure you’re going to love them.
We’ll start with a pozole to whet your appetite It is a traditional rich broth made from hominy (nixtamalized corn kernels) with meat, vegetables and spices which vary depending on the region. There are two general varieties, the red and green pozole, both of which are delicious.
We’ll continue with a mole poblano, a staple Mexican favourite. The ingredients include cocoa, garlic, onion, red tomato, almonds, nuts or raisins, herbs and spices such as parsley, pepper and cloves, and, of course, four types of chilli. This makes a thick, dark sauce to which turkey or chicken is added before serving it with rice, beans or tortillas.
Tamales are eaten throughout Latin America, but they are even more important in Mexico. They are made of corn dough that is usually cooked in a banana leaf which adds exceptional flavour, and can be filled with meat, cheese or even fruit for the sweetest versions.
And we must not forget the tacos, one of the most famous dishes in Mexican cuisine. There are an infinite number of varieties of these corn tortillas, but we would highlight the tacos al pastor, suadero, birria, carnitas or cochinita pibil. But it’s the street-food tacos that definitely taste the best. Don’t forget to accompany them with onion, cilantro, lime and guacamole or pico de gallo.
For those of you who prefer fish, don’t forget to ask for the Veracruz-style fish, zarandeado fish, aguachile or prawn tacos. These are all fresh dishes that mix vivid and strong flavours that complement each other perfectly.
Those of you who have a sweet tooth should know that the three-milk sponge cake served bathed in condensed milk pairs very well with atole, a comforting corn-based drink flavoured with cocoa, vanilla or cinnamon, among other options.
Mexican cuisine is very much linked to its traditions, and the explosion of flavours can be addictive. Mexico tastes good, and knows it. Believe us, the country will conquer you through your stomach.
