Mexico City is commonly known as CDMX, and is a vibrant metropolis, full of culture and history and numerous places to sample the amazing local cuisine. The contrasts are evident as you stroll around its streets appreciating its extraordinary and unique beauty.
This city perfectly combines a colonial past with an intense, modern commercial vibe. There are so many places to visit that the list could go on forever, but here are just a few recommendations so you know at least a few things you must not miss.
These include the Frida Kahlo Museum (also known as the Blue House), where you can see exhibitions and works by the artist, or the La Lagunilla Market, the most famous traditional open-air market in the capital. As you walk through such a picturesque place, you can also enjoy a refreshing and typical michelada.
If you visit the Xochimilco Floating Gardens, you will be able to delve into the pre-Columbian past in the region. The gardens are located in a district that has a number of popular canals that were built by the Aztecs and are still used to transport visitors aboard the charming trajineras.
As for local customs, mariachi music is famous throughout the world. If you want to sing a few rancheras, the best place to head for is the Plaza Garibaldi. If you’re in the mood, you can continue dancing and partying in the numerous and very varied bars in the area.
If you tour the city from end to end, at some point you will definitely find yourself in the Chilpancingo metro station. At the exit to the station, La Condesa is full of stalls offering delicious street food and all the typical Mexican dishes. The perfect place for a bite to eat before continuing exploring.
And speaking of typical food…
To whet your appetite, we recommend you do not leave Mexico City without trying the chicharrones, esquites, guajolotas or the famous tacos. There are tacos for all tastes: al pastor, carnitas, suadero, de guisado or de canasta, and the list goes on. Mexico conquers you through the stomach. Visit with an open mind and an empty stomach.
These delicacies taste even better if you digest them with a visit to the mezcalerías in the famous district of Roma or with a traditional michelada.
Mexico City is a very special city that once seen, is never forgotten.
