We would have to say that Palma is a city that strikes the perfect balance between beauty, history, leisure and cuisine. A combination that makes it an ideal city to visit. Ideal for enjoying a few days off, getting away from the routine and spending your time enjoying long and fascinating days at your own pace.
Perhaps it’s the serene and leisurely pace of the narrow streets in the city centre, the red and orange hues of its sunsets, the beauty of its many different neighbourhoods or the multicultural nature of its architecture. Whatever it is, Palma is a city that has been blessed in so many ways.
The island capital has more than 400,000 inhabitants and offers an almost endless choice of activities and options for both local residents and visitors: museums, markets, cultural attractions, restaurants and bars, exhibitions and almost everything you could ask of a lively and dynamic city.
What to visit in Palma?
La Seu: Palma Cathedral.
Located on the shores of Palma Bay in the centre of the city, it is the most important religious building on the island.
Apart from a magnificent seaside location, what makes this cathedral unique is a combination of Gothic architecture and Renaissance-style features. Its large rose window, also known as the Gothic Eye, is considered the largest and most spectacular of all Gothic rose windows.
Almudaina Palace
The Almudaina Palace (Royal Palace) was built in 1311 and is an example of the Catalan Gothic architectural style of the age. There are two towers on each side of its entrance that were built at different times and today both form part of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Along with Palma Cathedral, it has become a landmark of the capital city, a palace that reflects the artistic styles of all the cultures that have had an impact on the history of the island.
Es Baluard Museum
Es Baluard is a contemporary art museum located on the old city walls. It offers a great collection of contemporary art and regularly hosts exhibitions by international artists. It is the top attraction in the city for art lovers.
Palma Lonja
Built in the mid-16th century, the building was designed as a market and later came to be used as the seat of local government. The building has magnificent views of the bay and has now been restored to make it one of the most popular attractions thanks to its stunning architecture.
Explore the old town and stroll around its narrow streets to discover beautiful Mallorcan patios and numerous local shops. Savour the vibes in the city and the great atmosphere in the cafes and bars around the Plaza España, in Santa Catalina or Blanquerna.
Food markets, cinemas and theatres. Palma is a city full of attractions. To get to know it better, the best thing you can do is just wander around all its different districts, losing track of time and the direction you’re heading as you gradually discover all its magic.
